Cycling Mont Ventoux three times in one day isn’t just a challenge—it’s an achievement that earns you entry into the “Club des Cinglés du Ventoux”—the Mont Ventoux Crazy Club.
It’s 137km, 4,400m of climbing, and more than just a physical test. It’s a journey filled with lessons that apply directly to business and leadership. Here’s what I took away:
1. Resilience: Prepare for the Unexpected, and Adapt
The first climb from Malaucène went smoothly in the dark, with the mountain to myself. But the descent to Bédoin at 80 km/h was a shock: without a lightweight wind jacket, the cold hit hard. I briefly lost focus—a dangerous moment—but eased back, recalibrated, and made it safely to Bédoin, where two hot espressos revived me.
Business Insight: Preparation is essential, but unexpected challenges are inevitable. Resilience isn’t about avoiding setbacks—it’s about adapting and staying calm under pressure. In business, when things go wrong (and they will), those who can quickly adjust their strategy will come out ahead.
2. Strategy: Pace Yourself for the Long Game
The second ascent, from Bédoin, was the toughest. As others surged past me, I felt the urge to race—but this wasn’t about beating them. It was about sticking to my plan. Burning out on this climb could have jeopardized the entire day. I focused on my rhythm, conserved energy, and reached the summit for the second time.
Business Insight: In a competitive landscape, it’s tempting to chase quick wins or compare yourself to others. But sustainable success comes from pacing yourself and focusing on what truly matters. Stick to your strategy, play the long game, and don’t let unnecessary competition derail your progress.
3. Focus: Regroup and Keep Moving Forward
By the time I reached Sault for the final climb, fatigue had set in. I stopped at a restaurant for pasta and full-fat Coke—a lifeline for tired legs. On the climb, I paused again at Chalet Reynard, 6km from the summit, for another Coke and a stretch. Refueled and refocused, I pushed through the grind to reach the summit for the third time.
Business Insight: Fatigue and setbacks are part of any ambitious journey. The key is to pause when needed, regroup, and refocus on the next step. Whether you’re leading a team or building a business, taking time to recharge ensures you can finish strong and achieve your goals.
4. Celebration: Reflect and Acknowledge Your Wins
The final descent to Malaucène was exhilarating, hitting speeds of 80 km/h. Even in the excitement, I had to stay grounded and focused. At Malaucène, there were no cheering crowds—just me, my bike, and the quiet satisfaction of completing something extraordinary. I paused to take it all in before riding the final 20km back to Vaison-la-Romaine to celebrate with my family.
Business Insight: Success often doesn’t come with applause. Celebrating your wins—even quietly—builds momentum and helps you reflect on the journey. Recognizing achievements, big or small, isn’t just rewarding; it’s essential for sustaining motivation and growth.
The Final Takeaway
Cycling Mont Ventoux three times in one day taught me this:
Resilience to adapt when plans go awry.
Strategy to focus on the long game.
Focus to regroup and keep moving forward.
Celebration to reflect and appreciate progress.
Whether you’re climbing a mountain or navigating a tough business year, these lessons are universal.
